New Google project offers Kubernetes building blocks for CI/CD

Image
Cloud-native technologies such as  Kubernetes  promise to be a  hedge against cloud lock-in. A new open-source project, Tekton , offers a Kubernetes-native framework for quickly building CI/CD systems that run anywhere Kubernetes runs. Plus, Tekton will work with existing CI/CD servers such as Jenkins.  The Google-led project, which has had contributions from other companies, features a shared set of building blocks for creating cloud-native CI/CD pipelines. WIth Tekton, developers can build and deploy software across multiple clouds or on-premises systems. Key capabilities of Tekton include: Source: Google Images Tekton Pipelines that run on the Kubernetes container orchestration platformand leverage containers as building blocks. Through Tekton Pipelines, developers combine containers to make complex pipelines. Kubernetes clusters are a first-class type with Tekton Pipelines. 8 Top Technology Trends for 2019 and the Jobs They’ll Create

Technology is now evolving at such a rapid pace that annual predictions of trends can seem out-of-date before they even go live as a published blog post or article. As technology evolves, it enables even faster change and progress, causing the acceleration of the rate of change, until eventually it will become exponential. Technology-based careers don’t change at that same speed, but they do evolve, and the savvy IT professional recognizes that his or her role will not stay the same. The IT worker of the 21st century will constantly be learning, out of necessity if not desire. What does this mean for you? It means staying current with technology trends. And it means keeping your eyes on the future, to know which skills you’ll need to know and what types of jobs you want to be qualified to do. Here are eight technology trends you should watch for in 2019, and some of the jobs that will be created by these trends. Because the time to train yourself for one of these emerging jobs

What Is the Most Secure VPN Protocol?

Image
VPN products vary greatly in convenience, efficiency, and security. If security is a serious concern, an organization needs to pay close attention to the protocols a service supports. Some widely used protocols have significant weaknesses, while others offer state-of-the-art security. The best of the lot today include OpenVPN and IKEv2. Understanding VPN protocols What’s called a VPN protocol is actually a collection of protocols. There are several functions which every VPN has to manage: – Tunnelling  A VPN’s basic function is to deliver packets from one point to another without exposing them to anyone on the path in between. To do this, it encapsulates all data in a format which the client and server understand. The side sending the data puts it into the tunneling format, and the receiving side extracts it. – Encryption  By itself, tunneling provides no protection. Anyone can extract the data. It also has to be encrypted over the transmission path. The receiving side knows

Facebook plans its own Cryptocurrency, integrate with WhatsApp & Instagram

Image
SAN FRANCISCO: Some of the world’s biggest internet messaging companies are hoping to succeed where cryptocurrency startups have failed by introducing mainstream consumers to the alternative world of digital coins.  The internet outfits, including Facebook, Telegram and Signal, are planning to roll out new cryptocurrencies over the next year that are meant to allow users to send money to contacts on their messaging systems, like a Venmo or PayPal that can move across international border . The most anticipated but secretive project is underway at Facebook. The company is working on a coin that users of WhatsApp, which Facebook owns, could send to friends and family instantly, said five people briefed on the effort who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of confidentiality agreements.  The Facebook project is far enough along that the social networking giant has held conversations with cryptocurrency exchanges about selling the Facebook coin to consumers, said four  .  p

German Government to Introduce Blockchain Strategy in Mid-2019

The chief executive body of the German government, the Cabinet of Germany, has revealed that the country’s blockchain strategy will be introduced by mid-2019. The Cabinet commented on the development of fintech in the country on Feb. 26, following a request for information from parliamentarians in the Bundestag. The document notes that fintech sandboxes are currently present in five member states of the European Union: Denmark, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland and the United Kingdom. The Cabinet states that they will undergo an online consultation process prior to introducing the blockchain strategy. Per the Cabinet, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy are preparing the strategy, with the expectation that other relevant ministries will contribute at a later time. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the German government is already consulting companies and industry groups that could become stakeholders in the country’s blockchain deve

Swiss Government Invites Hackers to Pen Test Their Voting System

Image
The Swiss government is eager to ensure that its e-voting system is safe and secure for those casting their votes. To ensure that’s the case, they issued a press release looking for “Interested hackers from all over the world to attack the system.” This will be in the form of a public intrusion test or PIT session. Public Intrusion Test The public intrusion test (PIT) will run from February 25 until March 2 and offer cash rewards depending on what the hackers are able to do. There are a set of rules  attached to this PIT, which set out the basics of the test, and the qualifying vulnerabilities. The rewards for this test range from $100 to $30,000 based on CHF points (1 CHF point is roughly equivalent to 1 USD.) There is set to be a mock e-voting session planned for the last day of testing on 24 March. However, hackers can attack the e-voting system before this date as well. Registration Anyone wanting to participate in the test  has to register in advance  of the

Upcoming PyPI Improvements for 2019

The Python Package Index (PyPI) is far and away the largest and most visible service that the Python Software Foundation (PSF) supports for the Python community. Throughout the project’s 16 year history, it has primarily relied on volunteers and donated services to operate as it grew from an empty repository to one hosting more than 1.1 million releases for over 162,000 projects and serving more than 2.2 petabytes in 13.8 billion requests in the last month. In November 2017, we announced an award from the Mozilla Open Source Support (MOSS) program that made it possible to launch the ground up rewrite of PyPI’s backend in April of 2018. This milestone has offered lower maintenance overhead and helped put the codebase into a much better state to add new features, improved security, and increased accessibility for users. While some smaller features have already been proposed, designed, submitted, reviewed, and merged by volunteer contributors, other larger improvements war

Cisco bets $660M on silicon-photonics firm Luxtera

Cisco says it is buying optical-semiconductor firm Luxtera for $660 million and will build its silicon photonics into future enterprise data-center, webscale, and service-provider networking gear. This photonic technology is essential to keep up with projected massive increases in IP traffic volume over the next four years, according to Cisco's networking chief. "Optics is a fundamental technology to enable this future. Coupled with our silicon and optics innovation, Luxtera will allow our customers to build the biggest, fastest and most efficient networks in the world," said David Goeckeler, executive vice president and general manager, Networking and Security Business at Cisco Cisco recently projected that by 2022, IP traffic worldwide will triple from 2017 volumes to 4.8 zettabytes per year by 2022, and there will be 4.8 billion internet users by 2022, up from 3.4 billion in 2017. pon completion of the deal for the privately held Luxtera, its employees will j
